Online Exhibit: Of East and West

My paintings come from an unapologetic desire to describe the beauty of the natural world. In these challenging times, when our planet and our very existence have never been more threatened, nature is the bellwether of inconvenient truths. It reminds us of what we have and warns us of what we will lose. It appeals to our higher selves and calls for stewardship. I most often paint the landscape of my two very different, but equally beautiful homes—the Virginia countryside and Pacific Northwest. The quiet, harmonious rhythms of the Virginia Piedmont and the Blue Ridge beyond, contrast with the rugged, majestic mountains of the Northwest. One tame, one wild—and both endangered. Pastel, with its delicate and ephemeral qualities, is the perfect medium to convey the fragile beauty of these places.

Patricia Skinner brings us meditations on landscape from her native Pacific Northwest as well as Virginia and Provence. There is an emphasis on the natural beauty of the landscape that is matched by the jewel tones of her pastel medium. Pastel in Skinner’s hands is exploited to its fullest, whether it is carefully hewn in its placement or allowed to open into painterliness.
